Two employees in a country post office near Palmerston' North, who are alleged to have been endeavouring to find a> ehort road to wealth per medium of the bookmaker, are to be charged at the Magistrate's Court herb shortly with conspiracy to obtain money by • fraud. The offence is said to have taken place in .connection with the Wanganui races. It is alleged that the two employees — one a young man 21 years of age, the other a lad of 16 — had adopted a system of manipulating the wires, and that a 6 soon as a result of a race came through they would send a telegram to a bookmaker, instructing him to put money on the winning horse, ihe telegram being^ dated an hour or co earlier than it was sent, thus leading to the conclusion that it had been sent before the race was run. The scheme, however, did not work out as satisfactorily as was anticipated, and suspicions were aroueed, with the result that the police • were communicated with, .the charge having emanated from Wanganui. The matter waft placed in the hand* of Detective Siddels, who has been in Palmerston during the past day or two pursuing investigations, with the result that informations have been laid, and the two accused will appear before the Court in due course.
