JANSEN INCOGNITO.

Nobody earned the five pounds that the illusionist aud incognito Jansen had about his person in front of the G.P.O. yesterday evening. A great crowd assembled early, and by 5.10 the Square was over-run with thousands. Not everybody was looking for Jansen, but there were hundreds whose searching look and paper tensely gripped in one hand betrayed their object. One unfortunate in khaki was earnestly belaboured by a bunch of youngsters, and another onlooker was seriously embarrassed by the attentions of the* heart of the multitude who liked his appearance sufficiently well to pound his shoulders and remove hie hat. Some humourists, unable to locate the reward, etfarted a movement in ifish — mackerel it proved to be, and this particular description of badinage was' tossed about to much applause. Fortunately the badinage was fresh. Mid-dle-aged ladies covertly incited small boys to keep a sharper look-out, ■ and elderly gentlemen and other hard-work* ing citizens hunted openly. Sedate police officers had their toes trodden on recklessly, and there was a ehako or two that will want the smoothing iron to-day. The occupants, of a motor car that braved the denseness of humanity, were forced to undergo a Bearclhing curiosity, and here and there a surge of citizens told how another lure had promised and failed. But JaiiEen remained undiscovered,' and at G. 30, when the pursuit of the fivo pounds was to cease ■the crowd ith;«t still clustered thickly in ,;fche Square began to amiibe itself as icrowds will. Meanwhile the illusionist had gono home to tea. He is to brave the curiosity of thousands aguin to-morrow evening.
