'VARSITY BOAT RACE BOTH BOATS SWAMPED.

VERY. ROUGH WATER. RACE TO RE ROWED AGAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright), LONDON, 30th March. The annual race between the Oxford and Cambridge eight-oared crews took place to-day over tho Putney to Mortlake course, a distance of four and aquarter miles. As usual, immense interest) was taken in the event. The banks, of tha Thames vrere crowded with spectators, while all the steamers following the race had their full complement of passengers. Unfortunately a strong westerly wind was blowing, and this made the water exceedingly choppy. Oxford had the good luck to win the toss, and, of course, took the Surrey side, which is more sheltered. They dashed away very quickly, and were soon leading by half a length, and this advantage was increased to five lengths at Harrods. Here the rough water proved too much for the light blues, whose boat swumped. Some of the crew swum ashore, while others were picked up by boats. In the meantime Oxford, continued steadily on, but opposite Thorneyoroft's the dark' blues in their turn struck trouble, the boat sinking under them. Nothing daunted by the mishap, the crew swam ashore, emptied out the boat, and re-embarked. They paddled steadily on to the judge's boat at Mortlake, finishing in 29mm. The executive thereupon met and declared the race void.
