ORIENTAL BEATS PONEKE. ■•I .s . S • The first Rugby match of the season was played on the Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon between Oriental^ and Poneke. The first honours of the season fell to the whites, a typical Oriental passing rush carriea out by Carrad", Kinvig, Walker, and Hale, ending in the latter scoring a try. Eberhardt. from a forward scramble, added another before half-time, when the score read — —Oriental 6, Poneke 0, neither try being converted. In the second spell Oarmichael, Walker, Hale and Francis added tries in succession for Oriental, who were thus leading by 18 to 0. The goalkicking was poor. Finally Morris, cleverly followed up "a drop-out of his own, regained possession and ran in from the half-way untouched. The try was unconverted and the game ended — Oriental 18, Ponoko 3. Mr. Simpson was referee. PIFTH^CLASS. A& a curtain-raiser Poneke (fifth-class) played Oriental (fifth) and won by 14 points to nil.
