There was again a good attendance and the racing was not by any means lacking in interest. Though no rank outsider prevailed, winners were far from easy tq find, and as far as the majority of regular racegoers are eon-! cerned the meeting was an unprofitable one. . . THE AUTUMN- HANDICAP. Sinapis, who had, not started on the opening day, made her appearance in the Autumn' Handicap, and with Deeley up she. was made a good favourite. In view of his fine effort , in the Waipipi Cup,"- Golden -Loop had a large- fol-* lowing, whikt St.; Felix was by no* neglected.. The last named quickly took up the running and led down the back at & solid pace from Bally Shannon and. Sinapis, Sea Queen being already badly placed. Bally Shannon took command as the turn was negotiated, whilst Golden Loop 1 couTd now foe seefi improving his. position. Bally Shannon was first into the straight, but Sinapis then slipped, through on the xails, and at the distance she looked like scoring: Ryan then brought Golden, Loop along.- on the outside, " and .him , an easy winner by* three .■lengths. --Bally Shannori was a length and a-half ."away .third,- followed by British Maid and N,egativfe. THE FINAL WELTEB. Next to the Autumn Handicap, the Final Welter, attracted most attention, for the field included a Great Easter Handicap candidate in Effort. Odds were, laid on the chestnut mare's ability to annex the stake, but though she had every jjhance she was easily beaten by Te RotL Full Rate led until the distance was reached, when fii«t Effort and th £ n J£S E . oti passed him on the outside. Effort s disappointing display points to her having very email prospect of success in the big event at Riccarton. Te Roti, it may' be mentioned, had started earlier in the day, when, ridden by Hodder, he finished .unplaced behind Naumai: In the Finol Welter, Jenkins had the mount, and the gelding, was more heavily supported than his* previous form ■ warranted. On returning to scale his rider, who ' fully retain* i& popularity, " was loudly cheered. REMAINING EVENTS. Mira was well 'fancied for the opening event, but the best he could do after getting oaly a fairly good passage, was to finish third. i This form does not make him out more than a moderate. He has however, done very little racing, and is a well-bred, good-looking colt, that- may improve. Lord Renown led throughout, and won 'very easily by three lengths,. He seems, judging by, hie displays both at 'Dannevirke and Opaki, to be a second day horse. Bonnie Boy was again unlucky, in that he got into all the trouble that wa6 going, and it was noticeable that when Meagher hit him he ran away , from 'the whip. " " Naumai wae voted good for the Telephone Handicap, and co matters turned ou t> for a. capital start having been effected, he quickly obtained the lead, and never giving either of his opponents a chance to get on terms, scored handsomely by a length* and a-half. Miss Roberts and Karoro were the best backed ones for the Scurry, and after indulging Panthea with the lead until the distance, Miss Roberts put in her claim, and won very comfortably from an outsider in Miss Vena. Panthea Was fourth, and Karoro, who ia evidently of little account, fifth. Toney had a large following for the" High Weight Handicap, and getting out with an advantage he led all the way, and won as he liked by two lengths; ,He is quite a, useful-looking gelding by Advance, and as he has plenty "of pace he should hold his own in better company than he met to-day. • Elfish wa6 hampered by his big burden, but after being badly placed during the early stages he managed to finish third. Simple Sam, a bob-tailed thestnut gelding that put me in mind of Telephone,'who used to win short races about fifteen years ago, scored a hollow victory in the Railway Jiuck- Handicap, in which Allurement waß unlucky enough to get very badly away. Simple Sam, who has the reputation of being able to | beat Te'Roti- in pri vvac,t c, .should win further races this season. -, T.ho concluding event went to a wellbacked candidate in Leapuki, who was Jways at th« head of affaire, and won I comfortably by\. a length and a-half. Here, again, Allurement was unfortunate. Half a furlong from home Jen-. kins_tried to take her up on the inside, but Leapuki then appeared' to close in a little, the result being that Jenkins had to promptly steady his mount and pull her out. But 1 for thi6 Allurement would have been difficult to beat. Gay Lawless was fourth. ' -- ' ; Since last meeting the Masteiton Club has erected forty-seven loose-boxes in close proximity to the course, together with accommodation for trainers and stable hands, and full advantage was taken of this improvement, which constitutes a great convenience. 't , foung, the point of whose ehoulde,i was fractured at the Wobdville meeting, made his reappearance in the saddle at Opaki yesterday, when hi> rode Allurement in the Railway Hack Handicap. . One of the Improvements the Mastorton Club has recently gone in for is a set of Hutchinson's scales. The'so ,are easily the most up-to-date thing of the kind yet invented, and, though expensive, it is a wonder, more r'Jubs do not instal them. T,here was an*"undue delay at" Opaki in posting the dividends. A lack of information in respect' to* overweight and the diaw for places was also noticeable. Mr. D- Buick toils me that he intends I tq have RaiigiHtua i^lded.. The £olt Jiab
not always reproduced his private form in public. There are reasons to believe an operation will have beneficial effects. Acrostic was lame after racing yesterday, and is to be turned out for a spell on 'his owner's station. j The Feflding Club is providing a lot I of extra totalisator 1 accommodation for its autumn meeting. Much inconvenience will thus be dispensed with. Mr. T. Cameron made his final appearance aa a starter at Opaki this week, and will, in future confine his attention to farming. It is about fifteen years since Mr. Cameron first took charge of the lever, his initial appearance being made at Feilding. Jenkins wjis riding in quite his old form this week, and, although -he has been out of luck for some timt». past, it is certain that he will not go -short of mounts during the autumn fixtures.. Many people expressed pleasure at seeing him at his best again. Among those who supported Goldsley when he paid such a sensational amdend w.erei hi 6 owner, his trainer, a ■^prominent horseman who has recently, recovered from an injury, a Hawkea Bay trainer, two M.aori women, -au employe* at the Masterton Freezing Works, aud the inevitable Chinaman. The appeal 1 was dismicsed and the action" of the Dannevirke Cluh was confirmed.
