THE ORDER OF THE GARTER
The Garter, which has just been con ferred upon. Sir Edward Grey, has come to be regarded almost as an hereditary right in certain noble families, co constant has been the tradition that tho head of the house should be a Knight Commander of the Order. Such a "Garter family" is the House of Beaufort or the House of Bedford, which has always had a. K.G. as its head from the time of Henry Vni. The Dukes of Norfolk, tooj , though sometimes they have lost their heads, have managed to retain tht Garter in an unbroken succession through many centuries. The Dukes of Devonshire are also habitual Garterwearers, and of the House of Percy no fewer than sixteen members have Tbeen honoured with the Blue Silk.
