RANCHING IN RHODESIA

Good progress in the area, under the administration of the British South .Africa Company is indicated in the annual report of the company issued last month. Northern Rhodesia, the board states, has not yet reached the stage in which administrative expenditure is covered by receipts, but there is a satisfactory and growing revenue which may be expected to increase steadily now that the conditions permit of extension of mining and settlement. The board attaches as great importance to the extension of ranching throughout Rhodesia. The Liebig Company ("Lemeo" and "Oxo") has already established a herd of 4000 cattle on one of the areas purchased, and other large cattle owners are similarly increasing their operations. Many pedigree bulls have been imported, and a herd of pedigree cattle is to be established on the company's Rhodesian estate. Factories are also\ being established for tho manufacture and disposal of pork products. In regard to North-West Rhodesia, Mr. Wallace reports that "the progress made in farming and ranching during the year gives hopeful promise for the future of these industries in the bands of European settlers." The mining industry in Southern Rhodesia continues to expand. There is, however^ a regretted decrease of activity among individual workers, many of whom have sold their undertakings to companies at high figures. The board considers that it should now take a direct part in the development of the mineral resources of Rhodesia by the formation of a mines development company^ in vfhich. it would hold a controlling interest.
