GISBORNE BUTCHERS ON STRIKE

TROUBLE OVER AN AWARD. fBX TELJSGBAPK — PHESS ASSOCIATION.] , GISBORNE, 26th March. The operative butchers of Gisborne. to the number of thirty, went out on strike to-day. The trouble arose over the question^of the Auckland award. A' conference between the mastera and men was held early in the afternoon. Mr. Westbrooke, inspector of awards, attended and endeavoured to effect a settlement, but he was unsuccessful, and the men ceased work at 3 p.m. The shops, however, were opened shortly afterwards by the master butchers, by whom the business will be carried on. There does not appear to be any prospect of a settlement at present, unless the masters concede the men's demands that their agreement should permit of affiliation with the Auckland union. Another conference- -will be held tomorrow morning. This Day. There is no change in regard to the butchers' strike. The men assembled on the wharf this morning to bid farewell to three of their number who were -leaving for Waihi to obtain billets. Matters are expected to remain in abeyance until the arrival of the Auckland organiser on Sunday. In the meantime the shops are open, and some deliveries are being effected.
