MINING NEWS.

Grand Junction. — The following cablegram waa sent from Auckland yesterday to the head office of the Waihi Grand Junction Company in London :—: — "Are crushing 395 tons' per day. The actual extraction is 34# per ton. The main crosscut north from the main shaft at No. 6 level is in 404 ft. At 355 ft a reef has been met with averaging £1 0s 3d per ton over & width of 38 inches. At No. 6 level the west drive^on the Martha lode is in 69ftj of low grade ore. At No. 4 (Empire) lode, No. 6 level, the -west drive is along 260 ft. It is 67 inches in width, and the value is £3 Os 3d. No. 5 rise is now up 26ft, and the value of the ore is £2 13s 6d for the width of the rise holed to the winze. At No. 4 (Empire) loda, No. 6 level, the west drive on the footwall lead is in 270 ft, the leader is 51 inches wide, and the value is £7 2s 6d per ton. •At No. 6 level the south crosscut is in 649 ft." Waitangi. — The main drive has been driven a further distance of 26ft, making a total distance of 3257 ft. The reef is 3ft 6in in width, and is encased in a good class of country. A fourth sample was taken out at a point 116 ft from the crosscut, or a total distance of 3249 ft in the main drive, which was of very low grade. The crosscut has been driven a further distance of 22ft, making a total distance of 153 ft from the main drive. The last round of shots fired on Saturday -showed a great improvement in the country. I think we have got through the hard blue ground, and the white sandstone has taken its place, and shows a few small quartz veins crossing the face, and a fair etream of water has made its appearance. Waihi. — The usual report covering the operations in the mine for the fourweekly period ended 20th January states that at No. 10 level the east .drive, ixnx the Martha lode, south section,' is along 206 ft from No. 5 shaft, north crosscut. At 150 ft the lode is 30ft wide. It was sampled in cue equal , sections, measuring from the south wall with. ihs foU lowing results :— Eirsi section worth" £11 19s 5d pel? ion,, •second section £1 0s 3d, third section, 4s Bd, fourth section £1 Is 2d, fifth section, 6s 4d, and sixth section 15s 4d. The west drive is along 209 ft from No. 5 shaft, north crosscut^ and gave assays from 17s 3d to 2s 7d per ton. A crosscut is in progress at 200 ft, and 7ft is exposed. On .the Empire lode the east drive is along 218 ft from No. 5 shaft, north crosscut. The following sample results were obtained as the drive advanced' :— At 142 ft, worth £4 10s 4d per ton, 152 ft 7a 3d, 162fb 13s Bd, 172 ft Is lid, 182 ft trace, 192 ft trace, 202 ft trace, and 225 ft 7s- 9d. At 210 ft the lode is 20ft wide, worth £1 Ob lid per ton. The following values were bbtained during the progress of driving on the north branch :—Boft: — 80ft worth. 15s lid, 90ft 13s 4d, 100 ft £1 8e 6d, 110 ft £4 19s Id, 120 ft. 6s, and 130 ft 15s 7d per ton. At 154 ft the drive was in country, and was suspended. Empire lode, west drive, gave results as follows : — At 143 ft worth 2s Id, 153 ft 4s 9d, 163 ft 4s 9d, 173fb 18s 3d, 183 ft £2 9d, and 192 ft 9s 9d, per ton.
