(From Our Own Correspondent). LONDON, 7th February. The Queen, Mary Hostel in connection with Kihg's College for Women, at ICen» eingtou is now assured of sufficient financial support. The^object of the 6cheme, as aimounced on the Queen* Birthday last May, is to_ mitigate the present yearly waste of infant life by training women in the healthy upbringing of children. King's College for Women, has made a most successful «tart, but the movement could' not ,b© carried to its goal Without endowment. Tho sum of £20,000 was needed to, provide a hostel as a residence for women (students. £20,000 for building and equipping laboratories, uint £60,000 for the endowment of balaries. It was felt that euch a scheme would appeal strongly to all who were interested in the welfare of the country, and the success of the movement was assured by the gracious interest which Her Majesty Queen Mary hae always taken in its development. Lord Anglesey gave £20,000 to build and equip the laboratories, another £20,000 was given anonymously to found Queen Mary's Hostel. Mk. Whurrie gave £20,000 to provide for the teaching of chemistry in memory of her father, Mr. Henry Harben, and when it was known that £30,000 wa* still required another donor, who had alroady by his influence* rendered valuable service, at once gave the amount. In all, a sum of £100,000 for building, equipment, and endowment was raised in three months, among the donations being a sum of £100 by Mr. Alfred Nathan. The hostel will be utilised to provide training for the students in housework. It will possess all the necessary equipment for teaching cookery and laundry work. The average age of student* entering tho college ' will be from 17 to 18 years, and the chief subject will bo hygiene _ and sanitary science, economics, including the economy of the household, and women's work generally. Practical domestic arts will be included. «
