The sentences on Mrs. Charlesworth, and Violet Charlesworth Were for five years' imprisonment, but they were re. duoed to three years'. Violet Charles-, worth disappeared in' 1908, and was at first supposed to have been hurled over a. cliff, as the result of a motor car accident. Later it became known that eh© had been getting a deal of credit from tradespeople, and the police arrived at the conclusion that she was hiding. This proved to be the case. She was declared a bankrupt. During the bankruptcy proceedings she alleged that she had great expectations from several gentlemen, including £165,000 Irom Alexander M'Donald, who was last heard of in Melbourne. The official receiver suggested that these gentlemen were mythical. At the preliminary trial, Dr. Jones, Violet Charlesworth'ft former fiancee, testified to lending her £4300. Mr. Justice Darling, in passing sentence, said the evidence showed that Mrs. Charlesworth had invented the story of Violet's fortune, and had inoculated Violet with the idea.
