TRADE RELATIONS.
CANADA AND AUSTRALIA. DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT. By Telegraph.— Prest Association .—Copyright. I OTTAWA, 31st January.' Mr. Pugsley, former Minister for Public Works., initiated Friday's debate in the House ,of Commons on Canadian trade relations with Australia and the West Indies. He insisted that liberal steaniship subventions were superior to tariffs in promoting trade, and accused i the Borden Government of insincerity | in* its Australian tariff negotiations. i Mr. Ames argued that an exchange of minimum tariffs was unsatisfactory, and advocated a list-for-list arrangement whereby Canada would secure preferential treatment on articles now imported 'by Australia from the United States. He concluded by advocating a conference of Canadian and Australian Ministers. 1 Mr. Foster, Minister for Trade and Customs, agreed that he preferred a list-for-list arrangement, but had refrained from negotiations for a simple exchange of minimum tariffs in order to ■ seek better arrangements. He hoped the proposition made in writing to Australia would result in a conference of members of the two Governments and a meeting of special commissioners.
