DEATH OF A WOMAN.

Caroline Elstob, a married woman, aged thirty-three years, died on Saturday morning under circumstances necessitating an inquest. • A post mortem examination indicated that an illegal operation had been performed. The inquest was opened, and adjourned till Wednesday next.
Asked if he agreed with the statement that the question of the abolition of the totalisator ought not to be submitted to the popular vote, because, if it were, the abolition would be carried, the Hon. C Louisson informed the New South Wales Totalisator Commission, sitting at Christchurch. that he considered that would be the result if the question were submitted to the popular vote. There were, he said, people who did not believe in racing or in any kind of sport; some who even considered it a crime to smile. Probably half the people in the Dominion had never been on a racecourse in their lives. " I dare say," he said, in reply to one of the commissioners, "there are people who would go to the poll and vote against football and. enskftt. 1 ' •■
