Cartterbury. wAre called upon to defend ihe Plunked Shield again to-day, .Wellington thi3 time being tho aspirants lor New Zealand's .cricket- supremacy. Tteur* was a fair attendance, and ihose present, caw an u>iarc-stirig afternoon's cricket. The Canterbury batting was of the aggrcwive order, and for the first C-W© hbuts thray 'scored at tho rate of a, hnsdred an Lour. The Wdliiigiion out-ci'icket wa«3 not impressive. J«<«Je of the bowjors seemed difficult, and, spiking gKuerafiy, the h&temtsi got frWasaJJees out., rather than being beaten uy tbo Vundlftts. Tfte ground fie»virag .^asif airiy good, i/hou£la most /»f the Ntoftftemers ware slow hi getting to auj thing that did .not come Waagnt lo them. Barondsen made a cplnndid nhovihg afc the wickets. Of the balls that wetrt xari byes, caie wi.-s quite o=st of hie reach, foad another he merely .rat 'go, thinking it mast hit the wicker.. | The thsee eatcbes which He made at tho I ,«fitckets were all good cnes. Hie Wellington team was as follows : — M. J. Orotnbie (captain), E. TVI. Beedjsy, E. 0. Blamires, V. Berendsen, W. ' & Brice, D> G. Patrick, A. H. Fenton, §. A. Midlane, J. J. Mahoney, W. R. L. Gibbosi and J. V. Saunders. Messrs Wilson and Cay gill were the umpi?«s, and Wellington and Canterbury were captained by Crombie and B*ese respectively* CANTERBURY AT THE WICKETS. Jicese won the toss, and had no hesituiion in sending Wellington into the fkid. At ten minutes past 2 Lusk and Hayes went out to- open Canterbury's innings, and Saunders . opened the bowling to Lusk, who got;, the ex- Australian's second and third balls past third man for 4 and 3. Patrick had charge of the attack at the other end, and a couple of pairs to Losk sent the first 10 on th© board. The same batsman presently got two more pairs — the laet as the result of a dangerous stroke through the slips. In the following over he gave a difficult chance in the slips, and then got under the next and lifted it high to lpng-on. Beechey judged it well, waiting right under the , catch, but dropped it. In Hhe following lover Hayes was caughtat the wicket, Berendsen holding the catch cleverly at the second attempt. 25—1 — 1. Norman followed, and presently Patrick, for the Second time, beat Lust .without hitting the wicket. The newcomer soon 'got in' -a couple of good off drives, 3' and' 4 resulting, and a fine pull stroke for 4 to Lusk sent 40 np. Norman reached double figures 'with a pretty 4 past third man, and Lusk got into 'the thirties with a fine 4. Fifty went up for half an hour's play, and 60 followed a few minutes . later. Runs were now coming fast, and this brought about a change of bowling. Brice replacing Patrick, whose five overs had cost 24 runs. Another 4to Lusk and singles sent 70 up, Lusk's share being 40, while Norman passed 20 with a 4 through' the slips. ■ Lukk'theh 'lifted' Saunde're nearly to the fence with a fine off drive, and the West Chrifitehurch man reached his half ■century in 60 minutes, while Norman, with a splendid off drive for 4 through the slips, brought 30 against his name. This over by Saunders cost 15 tuns, and he wa6 taken off in favour of Gibbee. Fenton also replaced Brice. Norman, with a beautiful off drive, sent the century up, after exactly an hour's pjay. The same batsman tfien got Gibbes to square-leg, thus reaching 40. In the same over, however, he chopped a short-pitched one to his wicket. W. Caritoh followed, but, without scoring, he was caught at the wicket, the batsman appearing not to relish the decision. Beese joined his club mate, but the latter opened out to Fenton, and gave Beechey another catch at long-on, which was this time accepted. Hickmott was next, and sent 120 up with a nice four to leg. Reese got a quartette in the same direction, and xeached double figures with another four to leg, Hickmott also reaching ten. A moment later good fielding by Fenton Bayed a four, but Hickmott off-drove Gibbes for four, and hit the next ball finely to square-leg, reaching 20 with ihe stroke. , MIDLANE HURT. At this stage Midlane Tetired with an • injured hand, T. Carrton fielding for him. A fine off-drive by Reese sent 150 up for an hour and a-half's play. Saunders replaced Gibbes at 154, but both ibafcsmen got in some fine strokes, and (kept the score going merrily until Reese returned a soft one to Saunders. Patrick was in next, and his Wellington' namesake now replaced Fenton at (fchd crease. The change steadied the runs for a time, but presently the score again mounted rapidly, 200 going up after two hoars' play. A new ball was requisitioned, md Ikice replaced Saunders. Hickmofct, who (had batted without a Hveak stroke, Te&ttinkl 50^ but v/as then taken well at itfae wickets. Sandman was the in goer and, after Blow i>lay, ho was bowled by a short one, T. Carlton filled the vacancy, but. jwas caught in the slips without scoring, and Boxshall joined Patrick. The latter (was playing splendid cricket and tho score toad advanced slowly, Saundsra again fcowled in place of Patrick, and the latfiet'e namesake gave Blamires a difficult tfijanc© in the sups. Two confident apjpeaJs. for 'leg before" against Patrick •were given in the batsman's favour, and (tfi/tti Boxshall, opening out, sent ?-70 up. Ihree run* )at*r tfibbe* replaced Brke, and Boxshall, going for a foolish run, fw»s run c-ot^ Berendsen taking a difiv Icait return we'll. -Bennett, the last man, iwae grren out leg-before to a ball which apparently pitched a foot outside the lo| -*fcump, and the innings closed, after g| fcour3' pJ»y, for 277. Wellington th#n hud a quarter of an liour to bat, Cr>wnbie scd Fenkon opening the , innings to the bowling M f JJeiuicit and Reese, *i*he farmer bowled ihe Wellington ekip'psr R'ith a good ball in his second ovor, and Reese treated i'enton in the same way in the next over, fcfaundors «uno iv next, and got Reese &n<Ay fo the leg boundary. Stumps iwere then drawn. The weather promises fine for tomorrow.
