PROFESSORIAL CONFERENCE. , After The Post went to press yesterday the Sedate dealt with the remaining clauses of Mr. . James Allen's motion regarding machinery for an annual conference of professors. Mr. Allen agreed to the withdrawal of clause 2 of the motion, and to the substitution of the following by • Professor J. Irtankine Brown : — "That the first conference consist of seven representatives from each college, in addition to the heads of the mining, medical, engineering, and dental schools." Clause 5 : "That the Senate be authorised to invite any of the members of the staffs of the affiliated institutions to give evidence when the conference deems this necessary for the proper elucidation of the subject under consideration"—was withdrawn. Considerable divergence of opinion was evident on the last clause, which was eventually carried in the following form : — "That the expense of tho conference be paid Out of the funds of the New Zealand University." Thus' the matter was concluded. The report of the Recess Committee on the Dec6mber examinations waa adopted. The list of awards has already been published. ' The report of the Recess Committee on history was' also brought down. ' TOWARDS NEW. OFFICES. Professor J. Macmillan Brown (Christchurch) painted in very drab colours the nature of tho present University offices in Lambton-quay, which were cramped arid crowded at the time the examination papers came in. He moved : "That, as the lease of offices > for the University has" expired, a special comtn'ttee be appointed, to report at this meeting on suggested 'new 'offices; the committee to consist of the mover, Hon. Dr. Cdllins, Rev. Mr. Evans, ' ana, Profes»6r Shaftd," Tho motion was carried.' - ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE. The interim report of the Receas Committee on engineering, and architecture was brought down. ' The committee re' commends :— l. These • shall be a scholarship to be called the Engineering Travelling Scholarship, of the value of £100, tenabje ; for one 2. The scholarship shall be tenable . only Jby a Bachelor'' of Engineering (itf6ch.a/ii<!ai, electrical, or" civil) who has recently completed Jiis 'cbufse. 3: The sciio'larship shall ' be ' awarded by the Senate after receiving from the Professorial Board a report on the general merit of the candidate'sr\^4.. The holder of the" scholarship shall within six months of the award thereof broStsui to someothef country or countries to » approved of by the Chancellor, and sSall there profitably employ hui time during* the whole term; of hk scholafeip in Acquiring knowledge of his profession ; and shall at the end of every thi'ee months furnish- the Chancellor with s fepott detailing his empJc-yme'n't; during that period. 5.
