THE BRIDLE-PATH.
The bridle-path among the hills Lies white between the brackens tall. Thro' tangled bush, o'er rugged steeps, It winds, unbound by hedge K or wall. No marks to guide it 6 narrow way, My track, unknown to alien feet, Save trees that btand like sentinels And 'vild flowers sweet. Tall flannol daisies lift their heads 'Mong scarlet fuchsias by the way, And clumps of golden-pea between — Swoet 6cetited summer's tribute pay. All softly green tho arching boughs That blend where sun and dow hiivo Hissed, With blue of jacaranda trees, Like ocean-niißt. it wanders 'mong its own'fair fields, And seokd tho woods and uplands brown ; Tho wdrld goes by another way . With traffic of the surging town; It leaves my track in solitude, Here whore the blue-grey shadows glide To meet the mista from fur-off hills And spaces wide. The ambor rays of eventide Slant Softly o'er it U6 I pass, And swallows hover, twittering, While sparrows gossip in the > grass; And then below the stars I ride, When tender night tho tired earth stills, Afar upon tho bridle-track Among the hills. — Annie S.
