HUTT RIVER. MEETING OF THE BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Hutt River Bourd was held at Lower Hutt last evening. i Present : Messrs. It. Stevens (chairman), iioots, l^ierkiu, Sladden, and Pinny. Reporting 1 on new work in the lower . district Mr. E. Fisher (overseer) stated that the erection of No. 15 groyne at White's-Hne east was completed. The length of the groyne is 114 feet and the total cost £75 8s sd. No. 16 groyne, about four chains below this, was also completed. The length of this is 57 feet and the cost £38 13s 6d. Improve- [ ments to groynes Nos. 4 and 16 in the upper division had been finished at a cost of £6 5s 9d. The erection of No. 17 groyne was in progress, t and there remained one groyne to be put in at the mouth of the cut in the ltiwer division. Mi". Fisher stated that he had not yet been able to take levels of the river bed as instructed. From observations he had made, however, it appeared that the bed had risen very considerably during the last two years, and the rise was distinctly marked as a result of the record flood in July last. This unquestionably accounted; for the menace to the 'protective works which had been previously referred ta The highest rise in the river during the month of November was three feet on the 6th. On other dates the, river was normal. The report adopted. The question of compensation to Mrs. Parman for land, taken for stop bank was considered, and will be referred to the Public Trustee, who is administering the estate of the late Mr. Parman. Permission was given the lessee to sub-let about 5 apreß on Gear Island for the purpose of market-gardening. The Lower Hutt Borough Council applied for a rebate on the rates paid in connection with the Hutt Recreation Ground. The application was nob viewed very favouratly by members of the board. The secretary made the position plain. The rates paid on the ground by the council, he said, were £4 10s lOd, and the total rates paid amounted ti> £16 12b 7d. On the other hand the ■ board paid to the council a cum of £56 18s Id per year in rates, and this included a sum of £20 5s 7d for land on which the stop banks had been built xip— land used for a public purpose. The chairman said that under the circumstances the proposal could hardly be considered a fair one. Without further discussion the board unanimously detided not to giant any remission.
