DEPARTMENT TAKES ACTION. On the information of Ernest Le Cren, Inspector of Factories, \he following Chinese storekee pars— Hop Fook 'Cnoiig, Jpo Xee Bros., J. Kwojog Lee.- and Co./ Smg On Tie Broß., Sing Keo and Co., Yung Lge and Cp., W«ft Kee Bros., J. Wong Wah, "Wong" rtoon, Wong Shee and Co., Sing On Tie and, Co., Yee Chong, Wing arid' Co., Wong Young Clibtig — were each charged in the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., to-day, with having employed an shop assistant alter 9 o'clock on a Saturady evening in the month, of Decenfber. Mr Le Crou stated thq,t thera was. a wholesale defianje^of the law on the part of .many of tlie Chinese ia the city and tho Department had at last been compelled to evoke the aid of the law. Inspedtors had made repeated calls at their shops, and .had treated them with every courtesy in explaining the law but their usual reply was "no savee." Mr- Brandoni who appeared for each accused and entered ples^ of guilty, said that the l^w was not really understood by the Chinese, but their Consul had now undertaken, to have it thoroughly explained 5p them. He asked that only nominal penalties be imposed. Smg On Tie and Co., Tee Chong Wang and Co., and • Wong Young Ohong and Co. having each previously been convicted for a . similar offence, were- fined 40s. with cußts 7s. Each of the re.ma.ming defendants was fined 20s with costs 7s.
