MR. WRIGHT'S CANDIDATURE

THREE OPEN-AIR MEETINGS. Three open-air meetings were addressed by Mr. R. A. Wright, candidate for the Wellington South seat, last evening despite the blustering weather. At Brooklyn and at Howard-street, the audiences numbered between 50 and 60, there being a- lesser number at the corner of Wallace-street and Finlay-street. At the first two places, the candidate was subjected to a good deal of questioning and very numerous interjections from men, with decided Labour sympathies. The 'opponents were not in. very great force at Brooklyn-, where a" vote of thanks and confidence was practically , unanimously carried, bub at the second meeting the Opposition was more determined and sustained. Mi*. Wright's chief ' point was this : The most important thing to be done was to turn the Government out of office. If his opponent were returned, would he vote against the Government on a no-confid-ence motion? It did not seem clear whether he would or would not, and by returning the speaker the electors would- have a man pledged to vote against the Government. He had promises of support from Dr. Couzene's people. Mr. Barber had been, treated with scant 'courtesy by the Government, .as. there was, a great defection of Liberal voters. Mr. Wright said he had received many assurances of support from Mr. Barber's people, and he would win by perhaps a narrow majority:
