HILL-TOP SUBURBS.
HIGH-PRESSURE WATER SUPPLY.
FOR ROSENEATH AND HATAITAI.
The long-expected and long-delayed water supply for the hill-top suburbs along the higher levels of Mount Vic toria wag turned on by the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) yesterday afternoon in the presence of residents of the district, City Councillors, and the chief corporation officers.. The party gathered first at the little pumping station at the top of Hay-street, where the Mayor set in motion by the switch the powerful eleotroturbine pump, which drives the water from the city mains up to the storage reservoir some 350 feet above. After;wards a, laborious ascent was made to the reservoir, and there Mr. Wilford turned a valve and let the water into the reticulation pipes of the higher levels. In a short speech the Mayor exiplained that the council had tried to make the residents of the high levols feel safe in their beds at night in regard tp water supply in event of fire. The risks had been minimised by the abundance of high pressure water. He mentioned also the schemes for Melrose and Wadestown. The Rasenpath installation was by Messrs. Lawrence and Hanson, a 64 h.p. motor driving a pump capable of lifting 400< gallons per minute to a height of 350 feet. - The same power would be used fqr Melrose, but the plant, wpukl be.of 150 horsepower. , Mr. T. W. Ward, chairman of the Roseneath and Oriental Bay .Ratepayers Association, on. behalf of the residents, presented the Mayor with a miniature silver turncock key as a memento of the occasion.
In' returning thanks Mri Wilford acknowledged the good work done by Ratepayers' Associations for -their districts. The residents should give these associations every help possible.
