Mr. Humphrey Berkeley, the owner of Fanning Island, states that ■••ecent excavations disclosed the fact that the islands wero once inhabited by skilled races.
•Thore have been unearthed the re? mains of a large building, 200 ft by 50ft,. in the construction of which no mortar was usod. The stones had been morticed together. Near the building was a tomb containing a human skeleton, a necklace, the teeth of a' cachalot, and other articles, including a skull of a poi-eating dog. Mr. Berkeley concludes that the island was one of the resting places of the Polynesians during their numerous migrations in the olden days.
