MINING NEWS.

THE GEAND JUNCTION. EMPIRE REEF AT NO. 6 LEVEL. [BX TBLICRAPH— SPECIAL TO^TBfe pd*T.] WAIHI, 15th November. The south-east crosscut at No. 6 level in the Grand Junction mine, which is now out rather over" 100 Jfeet from the shaft, has penetrated a' further make of quartz, which it is aniieapated will prove to bo the hanging wall of the Empire reef asj allowing for ,its underlie and the results disclosed in the crosscut in No. 7 winze (which id olpse to the main south-east crosscut), at a depth of 80 feet below No. 5 level, the ore body mentioned is about due. At No. 5 level ■ the Empire was cut about 135 feet south of the ehaft, and the -total width of lode matter exposed wae 60 feet 2 the first 30 feet being "low-grade ofe, the next 3 feet worth £1 18s 6d per ton, followed by 9^ feet of low grade and ' 17^ feet on the footw.all side worth £3 (?6 per ton. Development in No. 7 winze, which is down to within about 25 feet of No. 6 level givo the impression thai a more Valuable body of quartz will be opened tip at the low level than was the case at No. 5, but this point . will only be definitely determined with the advancement of the crosscut through the lode, and the sampling o.f the various sections of ore. jThe reef recently met with about 70 feet south of the shaft at No. 6 level, and which waa 10 feet wide, worth £3 2s 6d per ton^ will probably prove to be identical with the band ore cut at 94 feet south of the shaft at No. 5 level, where its width was, 3 feet 6 inches, the first 20 inches being worth 16s 8d per ton, and the remaining 22 inches £2 15s 9d. This and the Dominion lode are reefs which did not exist at No. 4 level, and developments ab No. 6 level show that both have gained materially ia width, and, value going down. ' .
