WELLINGTON EAST.

MR. D. M'LAREN AT ANTICOSTREET. Mr. D. M'Laren addressed a gathering of electors at Antico-fitreet last evening. The candidate maintained that the Labour platform aimed at' benefiting the mass of the people. He declared in favour of the abolition of what is known as the "country quota" to that one vote would have one value. A system of proportional representation should also be introduced. Mr. M'Laren also urged the need for pushing on settlement. The best means to that end was to apply more vigorously the taxation of land values. This year's accounts showed Customs revenue £3,078,828, land tax £628,723, income tax £407,-235, which indicated too heavy a burden in the , way of indirect taxation. He favoured the remission of duties on common necessities. His support went to the advancement of tour national system of education, and particularly in regard to industrial and technical training. The finances incidental to increased expenditure on old age pensions, widows' pensions, and other humanitarian legislation fchould be strengthened by adding the remaining Crown lands to the national endowments. He stood for majority decisions upon all issues submitted to the people, which was a plank of the Labour party's platform. At the conclusion of his address the candidate was accorded a hearty vote of thanks- and confidence. '
