WILL THEY CANCEL REGISTRATION?
WATERSIDE WORKERS. ' The resignation of nearly all of the officers of .the Waterside Workers' Union, consequent on the carrying by ballot of a resolution to sever ail connection with the Trades Council, and the nomination of a fresh set of pmoere, has caused members to take an increased- interest in the affairs of the union. A candidate for the secretaryship of the union addressed a large number of members in Post Office-square during the lunch hour to-day, and h© received a more or less attentive hearing. A number of the men, however, were discussing the new phase of affairs, and it was gathered that some of those who voted to cut the painter with the Trades Council and join the Federation of L% bour . did so, fully understanding that this meant that the union would eventually cancel its registration under the Arbitration Act. It has been rumoured that thwse who aspire to control the union's affairs do not intend to take stfepa to hold a ballot on this question. It has been pointed out that a decision to join the Federation of Labour and not cancel registration under the Arbitration Act will not tally, for the reason that the federation's principle is enforcement of demands by strike, whereas under the Arbitration Act a" 6trilse must not obtain. It is said that the withholding of 'a ballot on the cancellation aspect has been influenced by the fact that if 'the union withdraws from the control of the Act preference to unionists is lost, and also the power to enforce payment of subscriptions from casual labourers. It is alleged that a large number of those who voted in favour of joining the federation were not fully cognisant of the position, and it is urged that" if an other ballot is taken the previous decision would be reversed. The union is to meet next Wednesday for the purpose of electing the new officers, and •. the meeting is expected to be a lively one, as a section of the men have expressed their determination to force a ballot being taken on the cancellation of the registration of the union. If this is not carried then the position is anomalous. It is also stated that if the ballot for cancellation is carried it is probable that a new union of workers will come into existence.
