COUNTIES' CONFERENCE.
MINOR MATTERS. A considerable amount of detail bu&iness was transacted by the Counties Conference t yesterday afternoon, without much discussion. " Mr. A. E. Jull (president) occupied the chair. The following remite were adopted !•— Horowhenua- County Council—" That the names of candidates for harbour boards should be ift the hands of local bodies .early enough for such bodies to record their votes at their oidinary meetings, and that this council strongly protests against the present cumbersome and expensive method." TIMBEft ROYALTIES. Mr. P. Brass (Waimarino) mov*d— "To provide that a portion of the royalty received by the Natives for timber reserved for sawmilling purposes be paid to the local authority in whose district the land on which the timber is situated to provide for the excessive damage caused by the carting of the timber from the afoTesa-id lands." Several speakers testified to the I damage done to the roads by timber wagons. The Natives pa-id nothing towards the upkeep. Tho motion was adopted. Kairanga County Council— " That members of Harbour Boards should be elected by local authorities." Paparua County Council—" That in the districts affected by the Injurious Birds Act the minimum price to be paid for all small birds' heads and eggs be. decided by a. conference of local bodies." The conference affirmed a resolution urging the more vigorous opening up and individualising of all native lands.
