PERJURER GETS PROBATION.
JUDGE GIVES A WARNINGr Arthur Frederick Charlea Davies, who was found guilty of receiving a diamond ring, knomng it to have been stolan, came before Mr. Justice Sim to-day for sentence. Davies had com© up on Saturday, when Tm counsel, Mr. H. F. O'Leary, a^ke<l fof probation. Ilia Honour then said that prisoner had committed perjury to evade conviction. But for that, it was clearly a- ease for probation, A perjurer ahoxild forfeit his right to probation. When ha appeared in the box to-day, Mr. H. F. O^Leary said that Daviefl had a wife and child, and tho former was delicate', Mr. Ostler informed Ms Honour that probation was recommended if Ihe prisoner paid something towards tho costs of the pfosecation. Hi* Honour said tha*'a§ Davka ouJy earned 8e a day he eoxtld not do that. He would grant probation, but declared that in future, if he found an accused p&raon committing perjury, pro&'atioa would be fefUaedT The prisoner was admitect to probation for eighteen months oft condition that he abstained ' from liquor during that period.
