KARORI MATTERS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING, The fortnightly meeting of the Karori Borough Council was held last evening. There were present— The Mayor (Mr. C. Cathie), Councillors W. T. Hildreth, W. a. Bradnock, J. A. Frost, A. Hamilton, 15. J. Standen, B, G. H. Bufn, E. M. Anderson, and W. H. Nimmo. TRAMWAYS. j The Tramways Committee's recommendations, as fellows, were adopted *— * "That on Saturdays and Sundays the hourly service between the Council Chani« bors and the Park be continued up to tho car leaving the Chambers at 2 p.m., instead of noon? that the car leaving the Park at 7.46 &.m. be discontinuedj that enquiries bo made from the City Electrical Engineer as to the possibility of a half'hourly service between the Botanical Gardens and the Borough Chambers, instead of a twenty-minute service as at present, between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. ; that a deputation consisting of^the Tram* way Committee wait upon the City Eketrical Engineer to confer with him upon the matters dealt with in the previous clauses, and also, upon matters mentioned at the last meeting." MILITARY TRAINING. A oiroular from the Commandant of the Forces, which has been sent to other local bodies, was received, asking for the tern' pdrary uso of public buildings for drill purposes for the Territorial J?orce. It was decided that a reply be sent stating that the council had no building to offer, and that the Commandant, be referred to the Karori School Committee. * SANITARY INSPECTORS. The Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote in reference to the recent .appointment of sanitary inspectors, and asked whether the counoil would contribute on a pro rata basis, the amount proposed to be charged being £7 10s. Councillor Burn considered the council had enough inspectors, and that tho Sani« tary Committee of the council had sum* cient brains to look after all sanitary matters in the borough. It would bo better, in his opinion, to give an extra payment to the building inspector, who was quite conlpotent to report on any insahitary buildings or drains. Councillor Hildreth was of opinion th&t a sanitary inspector was required* The letter was received. , REMOVAL 'Off TREES. The Karori School Committee is to bo given permission to remove trees from the council's property _ on the easterh side of Donald-street, which a at present interfere with the access of light to the school. PUBLIC WORKS. The Public Works Committee recommended: —-That SOlb of mixed grRSs seed be purchased for the Recreation Ground-, that Mr. Harris be ihformed that the committee has already visited Wallacestreet, and has decided to do the work required, pi ana for which am now being prepared, and will bo placed before the counoil for approval; that Mrs. Cooper be informed that the fence previously owned by her in Donald-Street is the property of the council. Adopted. TRAM-ST,OP. Councillor Standen gave notice of mo< tion that tho resolution parsed at last meeting in reference to cars not stopping at Donald-street be rescinded. SANITARY. Sanitary matters occupied the council's attention for a time, and eventually a committee, consisting of tho M*yor, Councillors Hildreth, Nimmo, Burn, and Froßt, was set up to go fully into the question and repoM. LEAVE. Councillor Hamilton was granted leave of absence for the nest two meetings. ' ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the total of £192 o's 6d were passed for payment. DRAINAGE QUESTION, PROPOSED CONNECTION WITH ' CITY SYSTEM. A request by Mt. T. Ward, f>f the Evelyn Estate (on thA Karori 6ide of the tunnel), to be allowed to connect up with the Wellington c% drainage system was made 'to the Karori Borough Council come time ago, and led .to Councillor StatHien moving at last night's meeting of the council, according to notice, as followa;— "That in view of the Wellington City Coimeit being 1 pfepfcr.ed to drain that portion of Karofi draining towards the. Kaiwarra stream, and connecting this area with their, present system^ conditional j on the said portion of the district being j created a special rating area, with the fates (drainage and water) being collectable by, the Wellington City Council, thin council" will offer ho opposition to ths project, and suggests 1 a meeting between the Borough Engineer and the City Engi* neer to discuss the extent of such area, and also the boundaries of samo, and to tßke steps to ascertain the feeling of the ratepayer* affected." " I The motion waa seconded by tha Mayor and carried. A local Act might be prepared by your borough, dealing fully with the subject, giving the Wellington Corporation power to extend its water and t drainage system as necessary, and to strike a rate or make a charge oft the land (in the Karori Borough> affected. Regret was expressed by councillors that fuller information had not been given by the Wellington Town Clerk, and, after discussion, Councillor Hildreth moved, That a meeting of Karon ratepayers b© called at an earljj date, and that the information not given be in the meantime obtained.
