SUBSIDIES ON RATES.
One of the most important questions before the Counties' Conference yesterday afternoon was that of the Government subsidy on rates. There were no fewer than six remits from different counties dealing with this subject. Mr. W, Fraser M.P. (Lake County), moved—" That all local bodice should be classified in the order of— fiitet, their requirement* for assistance in forming and maintaining roads ; second, the annual rate in the £ levied by them ; third, the area of Crown or native lands comprised therein which, yields little and in some instances, no rates, yet necessitates expenditure in forming and maintaining the roads that run through such area ; and that the Government subsidy to be paid to ea^h s-uoh class of locai bodies should be based on these three factors." After a. desultory discussion, the conference decided "to adopt the came method of dealing with the subject as it had elected to do with the grant for roads question. The whole question of subsidies Was referred to n. committee consisting of representatives of the North and South Island, in equal numbers, with the chairman.
