MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE.
THE TAIEKI SEAT. Whan the Hon. T. Jlackenzie passed through Slosgiel on Monday evening he was met by a large gathering of electors. Indignation was espreeeed at tho mutilation of the Taieri electorate, and ateo the manner in which other electorates in the neighbourhood had been dealt with, notably Chalmers * and Oaniartt, The Chairman of tho County Council presided. The speeches made were all complimentary in the highest degree respecting the sitting member. Resolutions were carried protesting against the work of the Boundary Commissioners, and. asking Parliament to repeal the pseeent Representation Act, m order that community of interest should be considered, and that the South Island retain its present membership, with the addition of pro xata increases in the North Island. There were also present at the meeting deputations representing Otago Central and Chalmers seate, and these urged Mr. Mackenzie to stand for one or tlie other of these electorates. Mr. Mackenzie replied that he was not in. a position to* say what hia future movements might be< He also said that he was of opinion that it would be useless to protest to the same powers that had_ destroyed the Taiefi. At the previous readjustment of scale, some five years ago, he had himself $$*& recast tne position of Otago, which, he thoitght, would fotve conserved the respective interesta-Mhafc is, the urban and rural. These he submitted to the Boundary Conimissioners, but his protest and suggestions were alike unheeded. Mr. Mackenzie concluded hi« remarks by stating that he would never forget the great kindness he had received from the Taieri electors, and the tribute implied by that gathering would never fade from his merrfory.
A conference will be held in Welling, ton to-morrow between representatives of the New t Zealand Typographical ttnion federation and representatives of wastei* printers o{ the Dominion., with, reference to n new award.
