HUTT ROAD WORKS.
The second reading of the Hutt Railway and Road Improvement Act Amendment which was set down for considers ! tion in the House of Representatives yesterday was adjourned until Tuesday next. The Minister (the Hon.. J. A. Millar) explained that the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P.) was unavoidably absent. In reply to questions by Mr. Wright the Minister ! eaid he did not care if the Act were not I passed. It (simply provided that four ' new local bodies (which have sprung into existence since the passing of the original ' Act) would be in a. position to escape, their liability. In the event of the Bill not passing the other local bodies Would have to bear all the cost. Mr. Fkher . Is thfe Government going to save anything by tho Bill? Mr. Millar : No ; but we cannot allow our money to be outstanding too long. Mr. Wright ; How much will the work cost? Mr. Millar: It w getting into £100,000.
