FOXTON HARBOUR PURCHASE.
PALMERSTON OBJECTIONS. [8T TStK6&A£!t— SlSciAt 10 TM« POST.] PALMERSTON. N., This Day. " The question of the purchase of the wharf at Foxton Harbour is being much discussed among the local bodies concerned. The proposal is to set up a rating area including Kairanga and Mahawatu County, Foxton, Levin, Palmerston, and Feilding Boroughs, and the northern portion of Horowhenua County on- a differential basis. It is. assumed that the wharf can "be obtained from the Government for £20,000, and if a decision can be arrived at in fa-Vour of the rating area a Bill will be submitted to Parliament giving the Foxton Harbour Board (1) Power to borrow up to £20,000, the price of wharf; (2) rating powers over districts agreed upon, representing a capital value of £300,000, and power to pay interest and sinking fund out of re« venue. It is aha proposed to include in the scheme the purchase of a dredge costing £7000 to keep the bar and river navigable. .There was a lengthy discussion at the Palmerston North Borough Council meeting last night on the matter! the reasons given against the proposal being that the proposed allocation of rates for Palmerston were not equitable, and that the making of Foxton a good seaport would be giving too good an opportunity to' the Levin-Greatford deviation movement. It was finally 'decided to favour the setting up of a, commission in the matter, but to object to the rate propssed to be levied on Palmerston.
