It is >( reported that a steamer named the Niobe, and believed to be. the Canadian warship of that name, is ashore on the Nova Stfotlan coast. Tile vessel's engine-room ifl flooded. Steamers have been despatched from Halifax and St. John to render aid. The Niobe is a firet-clase cruiser of 11,000 tons and 16,500 horse-power, built at Barrow in 1899 by Vickers's firm, at a cost of £548.283. She carries sixteen 6-inch, gluts and fourteen 12-pounders. She was bought by the Canadian. Government, together with the Rainbow, for uae as a. training ship, and arrived at. Halifax on 2ist October last year. About a week ago a German, naval officer on the cruiser Bremen, while visiting Halifax, criticised the warship Niobe, which he said would be useless in war time. The matter was reported to the Government, and representations were made to the German Consul at Montreal, jvho apologised. _
