PROBATION GRANTED.

TSEFT Of GOODS. To-day Mr. Justice Chapman granted probation to E. C. Gregory, who came tip for sentence oil a charge of theft of goods valued at £5 5s 6d, the property of Messrs. A. S, -Pater&on and Co. Mr. A. Gray appeared for .the prisoner and Mr. T. Neave for the Crown. His Honour remarked that he had. given careful consideration io the young main's case. The difficulty was that he had uniformly sent to prison men -who hnd been guilty of robbing their employers. The reason for the adoption of this course was because inncoent persons might be suspected. Therefore, stern 'examples had been made. In this case, however, h© had decided to be somewhat inconsistent and grant probation, as accused was a young man and because he had been, tempted by aft older Wan. who had some pecuniary in* terest in the cormpting of him. 'Gre^ gory must remember, however, that ho had s mark upon him: he was tio longer a man of blameless rharnrtef, but hi« Honour hoped that' in (imp it, wottld lie effared. Hp musi not imagine that if he left ftev island his guilt wonld be, hidden, a«" ifc o-ftpn happened nowadays* that a person's career was knowi from, one country to the other by meatis of the poliw. Gregory wa.s admitted to probation for thi<?e jears. Tie was ordered k<> refund £2 8S sd. the low suF-tained by hi& employers, in monthly inptabnents of 10s.
