BY THE FEDERAL ACTING. PREMIER. THREAT TO REPEAL THE DUTY. SUGAR COMPANY^ ABUSE OF ITS MONOPOLY. (Received July 29, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr. Hughes, Acting-Federal Premier, has announced that he will not have the. slightest hesitation in, repealing the Customs duty on sugar at the earliest pos« sible moment, ac a solution of the Queensland trouble. He was not speaking for himself alone in tljis declaration, Referring to the increased price of sugar, Mr. Hughes- declared that there vfere other monopolies in Australia, bdt none- of them have the unblushing effrontery to declare their price in the daily papers in this calloua and indeceht fashion. People were simply expected to pay and look pleasant. _ The Government, Mr. Hughes con* tinued, had imposed a duty of £6 a ton in order to encourage white labour, nob to increase the dividends of the Sugar Company. * i If the strike continuis the company will Bell it& stocks, which are ample, at an increased rate, but by reft* sons of such conduct, the reason for the imposition of the duty would cea«e.
