THE TURF.

FIXTURES. Aug. 8, 10, and 12— Canterbury J.C. Grand National. Sept. 6 and 7— Marten J.C. Annual. Nov. 4— C.J.C. New Zealand Cup. NOTES AND~COMitiENTS. (By "Sir Bedivere.") I In the figures given in the Referee showing the amounts won by the leading sires during each of the past eight seasons, Soult is credited witn £18,U49 for the season of 1909-10. This does not tally with the statistical tables given in the Turf Register, in which the progeny of the defunct St. Simon horse are stated to have annexed stakes to the value of £16,044 only during the period referred to. Soult 's record for the past season — viz., £18,483 — beats anything previously accomplished in this country, and when it is remembered that two of his best representatives^-namely, Master Soult and Ely&ian — were off the scene, his achievement appears all the more creditable. His chief defects as a siro lay in the fact that he got too large a percentage of undersized horses and that many of his progeny had weak joints. San Fran, Obligado, Martian, aiKl Advance are gradually fighting their way to the front, and etill younger sires in Charlemagne 11. and Achilles have made a satisfactory commencement. Owing, no doubt, to an oversight, Charlemagne 11. 'e> name was not mentioned by the Referee's statistician. As is well known, however, he was represented by a smart one in Culprit, whose winnings amounted to £2665. During the past twelve months Danube, who heads the list of winning horses, earned £3185. With the everincreasing values of stakes it would naturally be expected that the sums won by_ the best horses would increase proportionately. Such, however, is not the case. Had Danube not met with that unfortunate accident, when he got hung up in a fence facing the scraping sheds at Riccarton last November, and was disabled from contesting the Stead Gold Cup, he w v ould, no doubt, have added considerably to his score. Still, the fact remains that the greatest winners do not consistently eclipse the records of former champions, and in this connection the following table, giving the greatest amount won by any horse during recent years, may prove of interest: 1901-2, Nonette £3960 ; 1902-3, Achilles £2685 ,- 1903-4, Gladsome £2665 (inclusive of the; Wellington Cup and a handicap for which eh© was subsequently disqualified); 1904-5, Mahutonga £2970 ; 1905-6, Noctuiform £2725 (this horse also won £1022 in Australia) j 1906-7, Master Delaval £2365; 1907-8, Zimmerman £3375; 1908-9. All Red £3230; 1909-10, Formby £2610; 1910-11, Danube £3185. Bonnie Boy, who was successful in the Foxton Maiden Plate at the Manawatu Hunt Club's Annual Meeting yesterday, is a three-year-old colt by San Fran from Melinite. He is thus a half brother to Armistice. The Wanganui Jockey Club will reopen the Julian case to-morrow. It is understood that representatives of the press will notj fco admitted. The new we^ght-for-age event that is to be offered for competition at Ellerslie will be known as the Islington Plate. The following paragraph appeared ia the South China Weekly Post of sth May: "Pietri, who was last year's best two-year-old, and therefore considered the Derby favourite for 1911, has, according to mail papers, got a touch of the wind." At one end of a eecofid class carriage returning from a race meeting four racecourse highwaymen were playing cards. At the other, says "Sentinel," were two strangers, looking on amusedly. Presently one of them saw the dealer give himself four aces from the bottom of the pack, at which he nudged the other stranger and whispered : "Didgor see that? --"See what?"— " Why, ccc that feller give himself four aces 1 /"— "What about it?" rejoined the other in a surprised tone. "Wasn't it his deal?" In conversation with Mr. W. Montgomery this week I learnt that the report to the effect that he had offered to sell Hoanga for £200 at the time of the ; Napier Park Meeting was incorrect. Mr. I Montgomery said he had not yet defiI nitely decided whether Hoanga would I contest the Grand National. G. Price tells me that Boanerges and Nyland may both be saddled up for the I Winter Gup. All will depend upon the etate of the going, foT while Nyland is aname to shovt his best form when tho surface is soft, Boanerges is quite at home in the mud. THE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.
