THEFTS FROM RAILWAY WORKSHOPS.
TWO MEN CONVICTED* A series of alleged thefts from the Petoto: Railway Workshops was investigated afc the Magistrate's Court, before Air. W. G. Riddell, S.M., to-day. Richard Davis', nightwatchman at tho workshops, was charged with stealing material and tools to the value of £18 18s 6d, the property of the New Zealand Government. Joshua Warren, a native, and William Mallinder, a butcheT, both resident in the Hutt Valley, were charged with receiving stolen goods from Davis. Davis pleaded not guilty, but Mallinder anr Warren admitted their guilt. ChiefDetective Broberg prosecuted and Mr. J. J. M'Gfiith appeared for Davis. Mr. Beere appeared for Warren and Sir. Jackron for Mallinger. After hearing evidence his Worship dismissed the informations against Davis and convicted Warren and Mallinger of theft. Warren was fined £3, with tho option of fourteen days' mv prisonment, and Mnllingpt 1 was mulcted in penalties amounting to JGS. A week was given in which to find the money.
