The sharp advance in the .price of shares in tho Waihi Gold Mining Company yesterday appears to have b«on due to two caUhets, viz., the prospect of an amicable sottleuieufc of the , dispute between tho niine owners and the employees, relative to .wages, etc. (the matter has since been, adjusted), and encouraging results which huve attended development operations in the doepor areas of the mine during the past few days. This morning your representative visited the mine and found that in the Inet crosscut put through the Edward roef going eolith at the 1000 ft level, the total width of the ore body has about 40ft, of which 34ft to 36ft is quartz, divided by a horse of niullock about sft wide. Some nice-looking sulphide ore is showing, and from the uppearanco of the stone generally tho reef should be of good payablo quality right I across after eliminating tho band of : country rock referred to. Increased importance is to be nttnohed to tho development owing to the fact that the reef is showing stronger and better .than at the corresponding point overhead. Winzes are being sunk on the various reefs from the 1000 ft level to connect with tho 1150 ft level, from which the water i& now being drained olf, and some of these aro down, from SOffc to 60ft, thus olearly demonstrating- thint the lode? live at greater depth and curry sulphide or*.
