CO-OPERATIVE COMMONWEALTH.
I , I Professor Mills, of America, who is oh a lecturing tour in New Zealand, gave an address afc Petono lo6t evening, taking for his subject "Co-operative Coin- ! monwealth." Principally the speaker advocated the State-ownership of all monopolieH and great industries. Ho dnscribed how monopolies had Come to be created, blaming the invention of marvellous ma-, chinery. That machinery, he said, cost' a great deal of money, and could only bo secured by tho rich. Therefore Hie man [in a umall way had been completely I crushed. These monopolies, in thoir turn, should now bo wiped out, and the only way to bring about; this desirable result woe State ownership. Mr Ml?ls then, showed how the workers, being ,ib the same time the voters, gradually bt»I came their own employers. The lecturer touched on several other questions, inI eluding mention of the interest taken by the various Governments in matters rej lating to commerce, as against those of war. The address was batoned to with the greatest attention throughout.
