HARBOUR FERRIES.
THE RONA BAY SERVICE. "The Mayor takes great credit for the improvement in the ferry service," said Councillor Robertson at Eastbourne last evening ; " but the boats are running just the same as before Mr. Shorto took office.' 1 He and his " ticket" were going, said Mr. Robertson, to do the best they could to improve the service. If Day's Bay were taken into the borough the service would have to be improved by the Ferry Company. If his party was returned the " screw " could be put on the cqmpany ,to improve tbe service in the interests of Eastbourne residents. Replying to Councillor Russell, who asked if he would favour a subsidy to the Ferry Company. Mr. Robertson said, " I have not learned the meaning of the word subsidy." He was opposed to anything save that that would bring an immediate return to the borougn. An agreement might be entered into with the Ferry Company for a limited period, and would, of course, have to provide mutual benefits for the contracting parties. With his "ticket," he thought the ferry service was the key to the whole progress of the borough. He had seen Mr. Wateon, one of the directors of the company, before he left for England, and learned from him that something might be done. Mr. R. C. Renner said it returned as councillor he would endeavour to use his influence to have a better ferry service. The service was the crux of the whole question — not only the service, but the boats. This must be gone about in tho right manner, but he declined to say in <vhat direction. ' '
