EASTER SERVICES.
Easter services were held in the city churches on Sunday. At St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral, which was decorated with white flowers, the Rev. T. H. Sprott took for his text "The Lord is risen indeed and hath appeared to Simon." The preacher referred to the significance of the festival and the fact that Christian consciousness was based upon belief in the resurrection of Christ. Services were also held at all the other Anglican churches. Archdeacon Harper preached at St. Peter's j the vicar (assisted by ' his father, Yen. Archdeacon Fancourt), presided over the services at St. Hilda.' s, Island Bay; and the Rev. A. M. Johnson at St. Mark's. There were lari^e congregations at the. various .services .at St._ John's. The Rev. Dr. Gibb occupied the pulpit. Easter hymns were sung both morning and .evening, and Easter anthems were sung by the choir. The. Rev. J. GibsonSmith preached at both services at St. Andrew's, i>akmg for hie text in the morning the words : " I have been crucified with Christ, yet I live, and yet no longer I, but Christ liveth in me." In the evening he spoke on the text: " That I may know Him and the power of Hie resurrection." At the Buckle-street Chapel Pontifical High Mass waa celebrated by Archbishop Redwood. Father Schaefer was deacon and Father Taylor sub-deacon. High Mass ' was also celebrated at the Basilica by Monslgnor Fowler. In the evening Pontifical Vespers were sung by His Grace the Archbishoo, assisted by Fathers Hickson and Peoples. Monsignpr Fowler preached on "the Resurrection at St. Anne's, Newtown, in the evening. The pulpit at the Taranani-street Methodist Church was occupied yesterday for the first time by the Rev. J. G. Chapman. There was a large congregation, and the new minister preached an impressive sermon. The Missions to Seamen was tastefully decorated for the Easter services, which were well attended. In the morning Mr. R. G. House preached, and Mr. C. Burdekin presided at the evening service. Mr. J. C. Cummings read the lessons.
