MUNICIPAL ABATTOIR.
PETONE'S POSITION. The question of whether the borough was bound to erect a public abattoir again came up for discussion at the Petone Council meeting' last night. la a letter on the subject, the Department of Agriculture said it would like to know tho position regarding the matter, and whether tho council intended taking steps to meet the requirement* of the Act. The department pointed out. that a ■considerable time had now elapsed Eince the question was first brought before the council, and it was necessary that reasonable steps should now be taken to comply with the Act in this respect. It was stated by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) that on the occasion of the last Municipal Conference, when he had breached the subject, it v.as promised that it would be brought before Parliament when the amending Municipal Bill was under consideration of the House. Apparently, however, nothing had been done. A councillor remarked that Petono could rid it-self of the .obligation to erect an abattoir by insisting that all meat sold in the town bo killed at the Wellington city abattoir. Another member urged that the establishment of the works in question would ruin all the small butchers in the town. According to Councillor Piper th« department should be written to, to th» effect that the position was the came as it had been for years past, and that as a borough it had no us© for an abattoir. In th» opinion of tho Mayor a diplomatic letter should be sent in rcpljr, stating the facts of the case as far as Petono was concerned, but eventually on Councillor Piper's initiative, a motion was passed relegating the matter to the new council.
