ENGLISH FIRM SECURE A CONTRACT.
CHILIAN DREADNOUGHTS. VALPARAISO, 10th April. Messrs. Vickers, Sons, and Maxim, of Barrow, were the lowest tenderers for the two 26,000-ton Dreadnoughts which Chile proposes to build. These vessels are to be armed with 13-inch guns. [Augmentation of her naval strength has been practically forced upon the Chilian Republic by the policy of Argentina and Brazil' in regard to new ships. Congress therefore voted, in 1910, a sum of £4,480,000 for increasing the national defence, and in October last shipbuilding firms in America and four European countries were invited to tender for a battleship of 24,000 tons, four torpedo-boat destroyers, and two submarines.]
