The gratitude of an inmate of tha Napier Hospital was illustrated at yesterday's meeting of the board (states a Press Association telegram). A room and passage on theground floor and a bedroom on the upper) floor were considerably damaged by fire* and the other rooms by hflat and smoke.! The building is insured for £400 in tlia Commercial Union office, and the con-i tents for £155 in the Phoenix office. Shortly after 11 p.m. the brigade \vas| called to an empty house, 220, Cubaktreot, where an outbreak occurred in at back room. Not much damage was done. A most successful public meeting waa held in St. Augustine's Hall; Petone, last evening under the auspices of tho Hutt No-License League. The Rev. Mr. Cottom presided, and there were also on the platform Rev. A. J. Seanler, and Messrs. Wakelin and Sussex, tho president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. The speaker for the evening was Mr. S. H. Mudge, of Melbourne, who. gay« an eloquent address on "Our.R^.' lationehip with the Alcoholic Family.'* The alcoholic family, he describee! as! "an enemy we love." During the course of the evening numerous musical itema were given by the following : —Pianos forte solo, Miss Heintz ; recitations^ Master Ken Usmar, Messrs, R. Home, and Evans ; songs, Mifecs Hinemoa* Woods, L. Woodhead E. Gcdber; dance, Master H. Donaldson ; dialogue, the Misses Braddock (2) ; pianoforte, duet, Mieses Heintz and fiodgera.
