SEQUEL TO DRUNKEN BRAWL.
ASHBUBTON, Bth April. Martin Joyce, an old offender, was today fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment with hard labour,, for assaulting a woman named Ellen Barker. The assault was a sequel to a drunken brawl, accused having brought six bottles of beer and two bottles of whisky to Ashburton from a license area, and consumed it here on the premises of a tinsmith named Chapman, for whom the woman Barker is housekeeper. Accused decided to go to gaol. OPPOSITION LEADER IN THE SOUTH. ALEXANDRA SOUTH, Bth April. Mr. W. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, left Roxburgh at midday in company with Mr. R. Scott, M.P. for Tuapeka, and drove to Alexandra, where he delivered an address in the evening. At the close of his address he answered several questions to the entire satisfaction of one and all- During his speech he dealt with the land question at some length, the Hine Enquiry, and matters of_finance. He deplored the absence of any irrigation in Central Olago, and advised settlers to procure the services of the Rev. Mr. Mason to find artesian water. The party leave for Dunedin in the morning, and on Wednesday night Mr. Massey will speak in Dunedin, after which he goes on to the North, and will return South again next month. DUNEDIN, 9th April. Mr. Massey wil 1 leave Dunedin on Thursday, but will return to Otago during the middle of May, when he will speak in Oamaiu and InvcruaigilL M.v
J. Allen, M.P., will probably accompany Mr. Massey on this tour. Mr. Massey has been asked to speak at Winton, but it is not likely that he will do so in Sir Joseph Ward's absence.
