RAILWAY FATALITY.
YOUNG WOMAN KILLED. fBY TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON, 9th April. A shocking fatality occurred on the railway north of Otaki on Saturday, the victim being Mise Ellen Louise Oates, who wae trawlling by the Main Trunk express. The body was brought to Palmerston hist night by deceased's brother, a well-known local cycle and photograph agent. Mies Oates, who was aged 26, had been staying with another brother at Wellington. She was not in good health, and was on her way to her brother at PaJmerston with her mother. When the train wae about two- miles north of Otaki she went out on to the cai-riage platform, and, it eeems, fell between the two carriages. It was come time before the guard could be informed, and by that time the train was far past the scene, but it was stopped at Manakau, whence some railway men were sent back with a trolley. They found the body terribly mangled, and took it back to Otaki. Death must have been instantaneous. An inquest will be opened to-jnorrow morning to take Mrs. Oates'e evidence, and to permit- of the body being taken to Christchurch, where deceased's home was, for interment. The late Miss Oates was a sister of Mr. T. H. Oates, cycle dealer, of Upper Willis-jstreet.
