In view of this, and also of Mr. Hawthorn's attitude of opposition, a meeting of the board is to he fteld shortly, and the whole question will be again gone fchrough. In a letter which appeared in the Post of Thursday last, signed "Not a Corporation Labourer," the statement was made that ' linesmen, employed by the City Electric Lighting Department were paid only Is l£d per hour, or £2 9s a 'week. Tliia i» absolutely denied by the Electrical Engineer, who this morning allowed a Post representative to look through the wages-sheet of the department. The facts are these. Three leading linesmen get Is 5d an hour, and their earning for the week in question were £3 3s 9d, £3 3s 9d, and £3 4s 8d respectively. There are three or four men at le 3d an hour, erdinary linesmen these, getting the award wages. Their weekly wages ranged from £2 16s 3d to £3 Is 9d. Lastly, there aro a number of linesmen's labourers, or assistants, who are paid at a rate of Is l£d an i hour. The department has the power I under the award of classifying these men a\ general labourers, and paying them accordingly. The lowest weekly wage recei\ ed by any one of these men was £2 3s 7d, for 38 hours' work only. He took a day off voluntarily. The wages of the others were : £2 10s 8d (2), £2 12s Id (2), £2 14s lid, and £2 lls sd.
