CHRISTCHURCH COMPETITIONS.
CHRISTCHURCH, 7th April. The competitions were continued today, the results being as follow : — Piano Solo (twelve to fifteen years) — Miss W. Beadell (Christchurch), 1; Miss G. F. Acourt (Christchurch), 2. Baritone Solo— S. Auwright (ChristchurchJ, 1; M. Orchard (Auckland). 2. Vocal Mixed Quartet — Wor> by the Cliristchurch quartet, the Dunedin quartet being giecond. Contralto Solo — Miss M. Bsquilan (Dunedin), 1; Miss C. Wildey (Christchurch), 2. Vocal Solo and Accompaniment — R. S. Allwright and Miss Jenninss (Christchurch), 1; Miss M. Jennings and G. Jennings (Christchurch), 2. Ladies' Humorous Recitation (second prize only) — Miss E. Ferguson (Suinner). Ladies' Champion Recitation—Miss K. Owen (Dunedin), 1; Miss E. Devereaax (Christchurch), 2; Miss A. Austin (Dunedin), 3. Shakespearean Dialogue — Miss L. King (Dunedin) and A. Young (Christchurch), 1; Miss 0. C. Burton (Dunedin) and S. R. Orr (Waakaka), 2. Gentleman's Recitation— S. R. Orr (Waikaka), 1; C. J. Smith (Christchurch), 2; F. M. Cardney (Christchurch), 3. FOUR MAORI CHILDREN INJURED. AUCKLAND, 7th April. The report has been received 1 of a serious gun accident' at Waima, Hokianga. It is stated that four Maori children of different parentage, in the absence of adult control, procured an old doublebarrelled gun, which they loaded with powder, and then attempted to fire it off by means of live embers. The gun exploded, with the result that two of the children were .seriously injured, whilst lesser injuries were sustained by the others. The details at present available regarding the accident are fragmentary, but Dr. Buck has left for Waima to render surgical aid. UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS. INVERCARGILL, 7th April. The Education Board to-day carried si motion, of which notice had been | given, to the effect that, consistent with the board's policy, and in view of the increased facilities for study, all positions in the board's service held by Tincertificated teachers be advertised for afresh on Ist April, 1912, exemption being granted to — (a) Teachers who now have been more than two year 3in the service ; (b) teachers who have obtained partial D since ( January, 1S09 ; (c) teachers who hold ' licenses to teach ; (d) teachers who spent two years in a training college between Januarj', 1909, and April, 1912 ; and (c) , teachers under j grade "0." The board further resolved I that similar action be taken on Ist April. I in each succeeding year. * TWO BROTHERS CHARGED WITH ' HOUSEBREAKING. DUNEDIN, 7th April. Two young men named Samuel M 'Donald and Charles M 'Donald appeared before the Police 'Court to-day on ! further charges of housebreakmg in 'van ous parts ol the city and suburbs. The former, who had previously pleaded j guilty to other charges of a aimilai" nature, pleaded guilty to three more today, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. In three other causes the brothers were charged conjointly with. j breaking and entering. In thase Samuel i M'Donald pleaded guilty and Charles not guilty. The former was committed for sentence and the latter for trial. HUSBAND SENT TO GAOL. DUNEDIN, This Day. Arthur Ernest Ede, whom Mr. Widdowson, S.M., described as a man absolutely insensible of his duties to his wife and children as long as he could get drink and tobacco, was •■sentenced to four months' 1 imprisonment for failure to obey a maintenance order.
