A BUSY BRIGADE.

FOUR FIRES ON SUNDAY. Of late the Municipal Fire Brigade have had a. busy time, but the busiest ; day of all was yesterday, Sunday. Com- ! mencing at 4.3 a.m. yesterday, the brigade were called to No. 92, Tara- ] naki-street, an eight-roomed house, owned by the Prouse Lumber Company, and occupied by Mrs. Mabel Yore. The fire originated in a passage, and by the quick arrival of the brigade it was confined there. The effects are insured in the Northern Insurance Office for £100. The building was insured for £500. From Pipitea-street a call was received at 7.40 p.m., and tho Thorndon contingent of the brigade was quickly on the scene of alarm, a nine-roomed residence occupied by Mr. J. W. M'Ewan. The fire was in , a< lumber room, and it is thought that a dropped match became ignited through a box being dragged on to it. A wicker basket was partially damaged, as also was the wall of the room, a few pounds \ covering the extent of the damage. The , contents of the .house are insured for ! £500 in the Commercial Union Office. About 8 o'clock another call came to | the station, there being a big glare at. Island Bay. The Newtown, Island Bay, and a section of the city brigade went out, but it was found that only gorse was afire near ( Severn-street, and as there was no danger to property it was j allowed to burn. j The fourth turn-out was the result of an outbreak in Arlington-street, at 8.34. Here the fire started in the kitchen of No. 19, a five-roomed house, owned by Mr. F. Sirley, of Mem-street, and occupied by Mr. A. L. Smith, who was absent at the time. The kitchen was badly burned, and a sitting-room was also damaged. The Commercial Union office holds a policy for £150 over the contents. A house on tlie Paparangi Settlement, Johnsonville, occupied by Mr. M'Mahon, was destroyed by fire on Saturday i evening. When discovered the house j was enveloped in flames, and nothing was saved, though many willing helpers arrived shortly after the outbreak. The building and contents were insured in the State Fire Office. Mr. R. D. Gobbe, on behaif of Mrs. Yore, writes to the editor, thanking Superintendent O'Brien and his men for their prompt attendance at the fire aft No. 92, Taranaki-street, yesterday morning.
