The- Government has announced that it will protect University Professors if their refusal to take the* anti-Modernist oath, recently drawn up by the Pope, threatens their positions. Mr. Gerald Balfour, who held vaiious posts in the Unionist Cabinets from 1895 to 1906, has reliquished the second-class political pension of £1200 drawn by him since his retirement from the Ministry five years ago. DAY LABOUR ON GOVERNMENT WORKS. SYDNEY, This Day. The Minister for Public Works, Mr. Griffith, professes to have great faith in the day labour system. He emphatically declares that he will not allow the "Government .stroke" to be introduced, but will demand full value for the wages paid. LAND TAX RETURNS. MELBOURNE, This Day. As. less than a quarter of the land tax returns have been furnished so far, the commission is granting seven days' grace. IMPERIAL CONSOLS. LONDON, Ist March. Imperial Consols are now quoted at £81, a rise of 12s 6d since Thursday. SALVAGING THE STEAMER TIME. ADELAIDE, This Day. Arrangements are being made to salvage the steamer Time, wrecked at Beachport North, in January last.
