MAGIS TRATE'S COURT.
Yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. W G Riddell, S.M. ~ For intoxication, James Thomas Irvino was fined 103, with a forty-oight hours' option. A twenty-sixth conviction was recorded against William Egan, an habitual drunkard, who was sentenced to twentyono days' imprisonment. A fidT-offondinz? inebriate was fined ss. David Wilson, a youth on remand, was charged with having stolen a rifle valued at £3 15s, the property of tho Now Zealand Government. His Worship Baid thoro was a strong suspicion against Wilson, but as thero was a doubt, defendant should get the benefit of it. The information was dismissed, but Wilson was ordorod to refund 103 to the pawnbroker in order that the riflo could be returned to Hb lawful owners. James Hessey, charged with having wilfully dajmaged two panes of plato glass, valued at £10, the property of George Howe., ' on tho 2nd January, was again remanded for a fortnight. Mr. O'Leary, who appeared for defendant, stated that the?jo had been five r.cmands since tho 9th January, and enquiries proved that the d?inaged glass cost only £3 6s 9d to replace. Already a man named Gilbert had i»aid £4 towards it, so that Howe had made 13s 3d, and counsel suggested that complainant did not wish to proceed against Hesßey. The magistrate said that this would bo the last remand. An_ information charging Lavington M'Williams with attempted criminal assault on a gii-1 14 years and five months or ago was dismissed, owing to the principal witness withdrawing her previous statement to the detectives. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for defendant, who denied the onarge.
